What can the Village of Island Lake do to improve traffic and transportation?

While many ideas have been put out there over the years and currently the intersection at Darrell & Burnett is getting a much needed improvement and enhancements, what additional transportation needs are residents looking for? While the VOIL should seek as much funding as possible, we should do so wisely and with a plan. Simply throwing darts at grants to see what comes back probably wouldn't serve us best.

There are some specific improvements I would like to see, but I want to know what you, the people think. So residents, please answer the question: What improvements or enhancements would you like to see the VOIL pursue? Keep in mind, roads such as Rte 176, River and Roberts Road are not village roads, however, in working with the state and county entities we as a village could prioritize where we search for funding and projects based on the needs and wants of residents.

I realize that major road improvements cost a lot of money, and are in the future, but why not start by fixing potholes with patch? Not a lot of money for the material while we are waiting for the major issues.
I think Debbie Herrmann is way over her head as mayor.

Mr. Shoe,
I have probably been the most vocal critic of Debbie Herrmann (trustee), however, I am not willing to cast blame on her for the potholes in the roads. The harsh winter we just had plus years of lack of maintenance due to a shortfall of a fully funded road program have contributed to the condition of the roads.

The lack of a fully funded road program was pleaded for by the PW Director more than once of previous administrations and boards. It is estimated to cost $300k/year to keep up with the road maintenance and usually fell short about $100k. It was not the fault of one Herrmann that created the road maintenance program from being funded.

And as pointed out in the newsletter, the road program has been reduced to patching. Be patient with PW as they can't be in all places at once. In the meantime, I suggest that if you know of a particular pothole, do not hesitate to call the village public works, especially to report potholes that may pose a danger to the public or damage to vehicles.

First, my comment about Mayor Herrmann had noting to do with potholes, just an observation in general.

Second, I absolutely understand that there is no money for major roadwork.

In as much as there is no money for roadwork, the next best thing is to patch holes in the asphalt. I ride a motorcycle and it is certainly un-nerving trying to avoid them. It is now the fourth of July or three months since winter has ended. Thank you for the time to answer my concern.

I would like to have a bike path through town that connects to the Wauconda bike path on Bonner Road.
