Garbage Bills May Go Up

Last Thursday, The Village of Island Lake Board was presented with an option to change recycling bins from the bright yellow plastic to a softer green Toter style. SWALCO  gave a presentation to the board explaining our options. The Village recyles quite a bit per year and SWALCO believes that if people use the Toters that they would recycle more, stating that most yellow bins fill up faster in many households. The proposed recyclers stand upright, are approxiamtely four feet tall and have two wheels for easier transport to the road.

The cost for the change to this style bin would be $1.25 per household, per garbage bill. SWALCO did confirm that one could buy similar toters at retail and still recycle more, but explained the retail totes would be more costly and unlike the Waste Management totes, retail toters are not covered by Waste Management for replacement when damaged or lost.

Trustee Ponio stated he would like to know how the public feels about the new charge before making a decision; no other trustees commented on how they would vote on the matter.

I'm curious to know why SWALCO wouldn't cut a better deal for us if the entire village would be 'forced' to go to the larger bins. As I recall, when I looked into getting one previously for just myself, it was the same charge.

We pay SWALCO, supporting them by recycling, making waste management richer, and it is being forced on people. All it is is a tax, the village gets the proceeds.

My husband tells me that I was misinformed (his nice way of pointing out that I must not have been paying attention when he told me something, lol).
Regardless, the big recycling bins would be appreciated in this household for that fact that it would cut down on litter (those windy days are brutal), and decrease household garbage output (I admit, we end up throwing away a lot of recyclables simply because we cannot fit anymore in the bins).

The larger bins should be OPTIONAL... I have 4 of the smaller yellow bins, I would NOT be happy if the yellow bins were not allowed any more, and I had to buy (a) new bin(s)

How did you aquire 4 of the yellow bins?!

Two came with the house when I moved in to my home. I bought one of them from the Village and one was in the middle of a street (not my street) already damaged and creating a traffic hazard - so I claimed and repaired it.
