Whoo hoo!
What happened to all the money received from the boat stickers? No beaches have any new sand, the lake was never sprayed for weeds (it looks as green as grass; terrible), no new sea walls. I would like to know where did the money go.
In regards to fireworks. Frankly, I think that the nay-sayers are being a bit dramatic. Admittedly, I haven't been able to attend meetings of late, but from my understanding, all fireworks funding is coming from fundraisers (i.e., Fall Festival), not out of village budget. I don't see anything wrong with that. I don't believe that fireworks are useless. I think that events, such as carnivals, fireworks, parades, park raising, etc., do a lot towards increasing hometown camaraderie & neighborly friendliness. Gets people out and talking to their fellow Island Lakers, gets the family out doing stuff together and builds community spirit and civic pride. I don't think that the nay-sayers are seeing the merits of that. Well, I do. I live in Island Lake because it IS a community of friendly people. I want it to stay that way. I like that I can go around the block on a sunny day and there's a great many garage doors open, kids playing outsides, neighbors waving hi. Other communities (i.e., Buffalo Grove, Morton Grove, etc.) have become shut ins. Nobody knows their neighbors. Nobody does anything to stay connected with their town. I don't want that for us. I like that I can take a fun event like fireworks and use it as a centering point for a neighborhood get together. And because we do things like that, I know my neighbors better and we're all more willing to get involved when someone needs help (bring supper when someone's sick, shovel a driveway when someone's pregnant, etc.). Can't put a high enough value on that kind of neighborhood, that kind of community. If you take away all of the joy out of a town's life, for the sake of saving some dollars, what's left to keep the heart of it pumping? There is value in the little extras that make us smile. Do I think that the village should go spending will nilly? No! But fundraising for a special event? What's wrong with that? If people want to give to something simply for the pleasure of the joy that it gives them, what is wrong with that? Nothing. As ludicrous as cutting music out of schools...people just don't understand the value...
Have you noticed that wherever we “go” now, Herrmann is shaking the tin cup for fireworks?
As Vinnie Barbarino once said, “Gimme drugs, gimme drugs”.
In the Newsletters, on our water and garbage bills, special festivals, on the epay site, etc., etc., etc. She must have forgotten about bumper stickers, or maybe THAT would be too crass?
In these hard times, why not solicit instead for all the various area charitable organizations, including the Food Pantry, among other things?
Herrmann even wanted to hijack the Lion’s Club beer concession’s profits for fireworks!
Why not create and raise funds for a town benevolent fund – help needy residents out with their Village bills?
I agree with Shannon about the civic benefits of the fireworks, but don’t you think getting behind these other more worthy causes also serves to foster community, as well as demonstrating to our young people what values truly matter?
