Recycle Toters Support Fails
The Village of Island Lake was presented with a garbage/recycle contract extension to include new recycle toters for all residents with an increase in their bill of $1.25 per bill cycle, per household. The toters were explored because they are upright and hold more recyclables; SWALCO and others feel residents would recycle more if they had larger recycle containers.
Trustee Saville asked that the board vote on the contract extension separate from the inclusion of toters. Trustee Saville felt that the toters, having the $1.25 fee was a way of making recycling mandatory to residents in the way of the fee. Trustee Ponio said he thought the $1.25 was a backdoor tax and felt that since the village makes money on recycling, the cost for toters should not be passed on to residents. The village does make money on recycling, in fact, the village has made approximately $17,000 since becoming a part of SWALCO according to the SWALCO representative. VOIL made $6,000 last year in recycles. Trustee O'Malley asked if residents could purchase their own toters at retail and Waste Management would take the recycles and the answer was yes.
The vote was 4 Nays, 2 Ayes, (Nays: Ponio, Rabattini, O'Malley, Saville; Ayes: Mascillino, Verciglio) resulting in a fail to pass. The board will need to vote on the contract without the toters.
If you are interested in purchasing a larger recycling container, consider purchasing one at retail. Check your local hardware and outdoor retail centers. You may also find some through the links below. You may also try calling Waste Management and asking if you may purchase on of their bins. I do not know if they will sell them to the public, but it is worth a try. If you have more recycles, call Waste Management or SWALCO (number on your bill) and ask them how you may put out more recycles for them to collect.

I think that it is sad that this one small 'green' effort failed to garner support from the village.
What I think is sad that the Right Choice cannot get this passed and lower our cost as well. You know the Village benefits from this not us. Our Garbage service would be less if we were not forced into this by the Village and could pay our bill direct to Waste Management. The Village is the Middleman.
I am glad to see the increase was voted down. The Village profits from SWALCO and this money should cover some of the increase instead of MORE taxing!
Shannon I'm not against being green just against MORE tax!
Good point Fish!
We all are being forced to cut back in this economy. Not this town. Just another back door tax! See the size of those totes? Not every one has the room to store them. The way the wind comes down my street it will be like a sail boat going down the street. The way the snow plows push show in my driveway, do not want to lift that up on a mound of snow!
Glad to see Seville and Ponio is keeping the Herd penned up on this one. What makes them think we need to increase our cost for garbage pick up? Next time lets get the Best Choice in. Not impressed with the right Choice. Have yet to see anything the Herd has done for our Village. Fish is on target on this one.
I just hope that this effort does not fail entirely. I hope it can be revisited, perhaps without the increase and/or a better deal cut. It'd be a shame to not take this opportunity to encourage more recycling and the profits made from such.
WHY $1.25 a month for EVERYONE? FOREVER??? How much do these totes cost for a one-time purchase price? Maybe people will do this IF they really produce that much recyclables in a week or two, the rest of us may just need the small totes anyways. SO it should be OPTIONAL, not mandatory!!!
Hmm, who runs this town, the attorney or the mayor?
I just don't see how this is a matter for the attorney. Seems we're always running to the 'attorney' for excuses to say what we can and cannot do. I don't see how it's a matter of legality to decide whether or not to suspend a bill for a hardship case. Now, whether the mayor should do it or not is up for debate. I see pros and cons on each side of that coin. Just seems sad that we're always hiding behind the attorney's skirts instead of standing by our decisions and the belief that we put in them.
Herrmann has the lawyer on speed dial because she doesn't know what the hell she's doing. Period.
If the Queen had b&*ls she would be King. Lawyer fees come out of our pocket not the Queens.
I might have missed a posting . . . but all we need to do is read the ordinaces to know the rules on garbage disposal. It is not about the Mayor or the Attorney. Do we really want our neighbors to have thier garbage disgarded privately? There are enough people in this village who don't follow the rules, just imagine if it was up to them to dispose of their garbage? You have got to be kidding! Ordinaces are created for a reason . . . our garbage disgarded privately???
Fish, In a village of 9000 people, it's not all about you . . .
Max said: “There are enough people in this village who don't follow the rules”
LOL! Starting with the leaders of this village! LOL!
I am sure other people are falling on hard times. Village needs to show compassion not chastise their residents. Being a "Village of Friendly People" starts with the powers to be. They need to walk the talk. No open door policy in this town. Max you sound like a person who goes home and kills baby chicks.
Max All about me? Let me know how you feel when you loose your income, can't pay your bills and the VOIL lets you know they will put a lien on your property whether you use the garbage service or not.
Max - learn to spell or get off the sauce! Think you're Guido or something?
Personally glad this one failed in a bi-partisan fashion - good going, Board!
Regardless of the monthy charge, I would have refused the container as I have absolutely no place to store it, and my one regular tote suits me just fine as a single person (even with all those vodka bottles). And I'm someone who recycles at a rate of well more than 98%.
The garbage guy for my neighborhood is totally excellent! He rocks! All of my neighbors, when their recycleables exceed their owned tote volume, put out additional recycleables in separate garbage cans, old laundry baskets and the like.
Guess what? These materials get deposited in the recycle side of the truck, and these irregular containers are left at the curb each and every time - no fuss, no muss!
No need for "official containers" whatsoever!

Maybe I am Guido???

OMG!! ROFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!
DBTR you crack me up ...
Been using the same tote for years. Already have GARBAGE CAN I use when I fill the tote. My guy doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Spend another $1.25 a month? Does the Queen need to bring in more shekels so it looks like she did something for VOIL? Like you DBTR I would refuse as well. No room for that kind of container.
DBTR~
I could not agree with you more on the bins. I don't have the room nor the need for anything larger than the bin.
that's so funny - from the sounds of it, I'm the only poster with a many-bodied household!
I yield, I yield!
